View RecordsRequest Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin police reports from the police records custodian, identify the incident precisely, and distinguish police reports from court records.
For an incident handled by Fort Atkinson Police, the department—not the city clerk or Jefferson County Sheriff—is the starting custodian. The department’s Open Records policy identifies the Chief of Police as legal custodian and says department records are available for inspection/copying from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday excluding holidays; under most circumstances access is requested through the agency’s Request for Open Records form. The current Police Department page publishes 101 S. Water Street W., Fort Atkinson, WI 53538 and 920-397-9905. If the standalone open-records form is not reachable from the current Forms navigation, use those department contacts to confirm the current submission method rather than sending the request to a different custodian.
Give report/case number if known, otherwise date/time, location, involved names and the specific record or media requested.
The department’s current page publishes 101 S. Water Street W., Fort Atkinson, WI 53538 and 920-397-9905. Use the Request for Open Records form when available; if the Forms link does not expose a working form, confirm the current submission method with the department at that number/address.
The policy describes a reasonable processing timeframe as approximately 10 days; some statutory notice situations can add time.
The policy says denied access should be explained in writing and non-exempt portions should still be released where appropriate.

The department’s policy applies Wisconsin’s public-record balancing analysis and identifies categories that can require special consideration. A redacted report does not automatically mean the agency failed to complete the request. It can mean some information is restricted while the remainder is releasable.
The policy says a denied request should state the reason and says denial is subject to review through the Jefferson County District Attorney or the Wisconsin Attorney General. The Wisconsin DOJ public-records page provides statewide open-records guidance; it is not the custodian of the Fort Atkinson report itself.
